The European Parliament “strongly condemns the arbitrary and unconstitutional decision” by the Maduro regime to prevent political opponents such as María Corina Machado (see EUROPE 13214/21), Leopoldo López, Henrique Capriles and Freddy Superlano from standing in the 2024 presidential elections, in a resolution adopted on Thursday 13 July (495 votes in favour, 25 against and 43 abstentions).
Deploring the fact that the Venezuelan authorities are ignoring the recommendations on respect for democratic standards made by the EU Election Observation Mission sent to Venezuela at the end of 2021 (see EUROPE 12896/11), MEPs urge the Venezuelan authorities to “provide the conditions to ensure fair, free, inclusive and transparent elections”.
They fully support the International Criminal Court’s investigations into alleged crimes against humanity perpetrated by the Venezuelan regime, and call for the release of all political prisoners.
