On Friday 7 July, the European Commission authorised a Spanish State aid scheme worth €350 million, to be financed via the ‘Recovery and Resilience Facility’ (RRF) of the Next Generation EU European Recovery Plan, to support the construction and operation of electricity storage facilities.
The aid will support the construction of electricity storage facilities intended to be connected to the transmission or distribution network with a joint maximum capacity of around 1,000 MW.
The aid will go to companies selected by tender in the form of investment grants of up to €50 million per beneficiary.
This aid scheme will be in force until June 2026.
The Commission found that the measure complied with the European rules on state aid and in particular with Article 107(3)(c) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union and the 2022 guidelines on state aid for climate, environmental protection and energy (the “CEEAG”) (see EUROPE 12858/2).
