23/06/2023 (Agence Europe) – EU coal production continued to rise in 2022, reaching 349 million tonnes (+5% on the previous year). The same applies to consumption, which reached 454 million tonnes (+2%), according to Eurostat in a publication released on Thursday 22 June. This rebound in coal production and consumption began in 2021 and is mainly due to the increase in lignite production in 2022 (+6% compared with 2021). It is a solid fossil fuel with a low energy content, belonging to the brown coal category. The main producer in Europe is Germany (44% of total European brown coal production). For hard coal, a category with a higher energy content, trends have remained stable in 2022. To see the Eurostat publication: https://aeur.eu/f/7nl (PLD)
