Hungarian Parliament ratifies Finland’s accession to Atlantic Alliance

28/03/2023 (Agence Europe)On Monday 27 March, the Hungarian Parliament ratified Finland’s membership of NATO by 182 votes out of 199. Budapest did not give a date for a vote on Sweden’s accession, saying only that it was postponed until “later”. Finland is now awaiting ratification of its accession process by the Turkish parliament, the last of the 30 Allied countries to vote. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan asked the Turkish parliament in mid-March to ratify Finland’s application, but said he was not yet ready to approve Sweden’s, which Ankara says is a haven for “terrorists” it refuses to extradite to Turkey. The Swedish and Finnish parliaments have also already approved their countries’ membership of NATO. (CG)
