Nuclear power is strategic technology for achieving climate neutrality, say 13 EU countries

28/03/2023 (Agence Europe)On Tuesday 28 March in Brussels, ten EU Member States – Bulgaria, Croatia, Finland, France, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia – plus Belgium, Italy and the Netherlands as observers, have reaffirmed the importance of nuclear energy in achieving the EU’s 2050 climate neutrality target at a meeting on the margins of the ‘Energy’ Council (see EUROPE 13151/1). In particular, they highlighted the contribution of small modular reactors (SMRs) in this respect and showcased the main areas for future cooperation, including: - ensuring the development of a skilled nuclear workforce by taking advantage of the European Year of Skills 2023; - promoting research and innovation; - facilitating access to finance; - exchanging good practices on radioactive waste management; - ensuring the highest standards of safety; - reinforcing the security of supply of nuclear fuels.
