14/03/23 (Agence Europe) – The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) and ANEC believe that the number of dangerous product notifications submitted via Safety Gate (the EU’s rapid alert system) in 2022—as reported on Monday, 13 March, in the annual report (see EUROPE 13140/15)—is far too high and calls for more rigorous action by national market surveillance authorities. In a press release published on Monday, the two organisations stress that these 2,117 notifications (a number similar to the 2,142 [notifications] for 2021) “only represent the tip of the iceberg, as the precise number of products linked to a notification is unknown”. They hope that the European Parliament will approve the General Product Safety Regulation, which will give “more powers to authorities to weed out rogue traders”, at the end of March and that the Toy Safety Directive will be revised soon.
