Charles Michel calls for further reforms

On Tuesday 14 March, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, called on Georgia to continue its reforms - just one day after a meeting in Brussels with the Georgian President, Salome Zourabichvili.

The European Council’s decision to grant Georgia European perspective is a historic opportunity not to be missed. Progress on reforms remains crucial”, he explained on Twitter.

According to an EU source, during the meeting, Michel stressed the need to work more vigorously on the implementation of political reforms, in particular in the field of the rule of law and the judiciary.

The President of the European Council welcomed the rejection by the Georgian Parliament on 10 March of the draft law on the “transparency of foreign influence” becausethis law was not compatible with Georgia’s EU path”, the source added.

The two Presidents also discussed the Russian war in Ukraine, its impact on Georgia and the region and the sanctions imposed on Russia, including the importance of preventing circumvention of these measures. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
