European Parliament waives parliamentary immunity for Nicolaus Fest and Ioannis Lagos

14/03/23 (Agence Europe)At its plenary session in Strasbourg on Tuesday 14 March, the European Parliament voted in favour of the requests to waive the parliamentary immunity of Nicolaus Fest (ID, German) and Ioannis Lagos (independent, Greek). Both are facing legal proceedings in their respective countries for making racist and antisemitic statements on social networks. Fest is being prosecuted by the Berlin Public Prosecutor’s Office for making antisemitic slurs against the German politician and activist Volker Beck. As for Lagos, former leader of the Greek neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn, this is the second time the European Parliament has waived his immunity (see EUROPE 12707/10). This time, the MEP is being prosecuted for posting a photo of the Holocaust memorial in Larissa along with racist and hate speech on Twitter. (HS)
