The European Commission announced on Friday 17 February the selection of 20 multinational projects from 39 countries contributing to the European ‘Restore our Oceans and Waters’ mission. These projects will receive €117 million as part of the EU’s framework programme for research and innovation, Horizon Europe.
Projects include initiatives to protect and restore biodiversity, to develop the ‘European Digital Twin Ocean’ project, to combat pollution, to support a sustainable blue economy, and to involve citizens in the mission’s objectives.
Some of these projects were presented at the very first annual forum of this new European mission, organised on 17 February in hybrid mode by the European Commission. The forum brought together stakeholders involved in the mission.
On this occasion, the European Commission reports that over 200 actions have been pledged under the Mission Charter (EUROPE 12985/23).
The European ‘Oceans’ mission was launched in September 2021. The accompanying charter was launched on 1 July 2022, to encourage participation in the mission.
