EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT PLENARY / Equatorial guinea

European Parliament holds dictatorial regime responsible for death of Julio Obama Mefuman and denounces persecution of political opponents

In a resolution on human rights violations in Equatorial Guinea adopted on Thursday 16 February by a large majority (518 votes in favour, six against and 19 abstentions), the European Parliament strongly condemns the death of Julio Obama Mefuman, a political opponent who died on 23 January in a Mongomo jail.

It holds the dictatorial regime in Equatorial Guinea responsible for the death of the Spaniard, who had dual nationality - Spanish and Equatoguinean - and urges Equatorial Guinea to cooperate fully with the Spanish judicial authorities.

MEPs deplore the systematic political persecution strategy of the dictatorial regime of Teodoro Obiang Nguema and the barbaric repression of political opponents and human rights defenders.

They are demanding the release of three other members of the MLGE3R opposition movement.

They call on EU Member States to demand an end to all political persecution and an independent investigation into the death of Julio Obama Mefuman and the general situation of political prisoners.

MEPs want the EU to sanction members of the regime involved in human rights violations.
