On Friday 20 January the European Commission published a list of high-value datasets that public sector bodies will have to make available for re-use free of charge within 16 months.
“The provision of high-value data sets will benefit the economy and society, for example by helping to combat climate change, reducing urban air pollution and improving transport infrastructure. This is a concrete step towards making the Digital Decade a success and building a more prosperous digital future”, commented the Executive Vice-President chairing the group of Europe Fit for the Digital Age, Margrethe Vestager.
The text, which is part of the Open Data Directive, defines six categories of high-value datasets including geospatial, earth and environmental observation, meteorology, statistics, business and mobility. New data sets may be added in the future.
In particular, the Commission intends to promote the creation of new companies whose needs are based on certain data, such as air quality or meteorological data.
