European leaders denounced, on Friday 21 October, the “unjustifiable and unacceptable use of force” by the Iranian authorities against peaceful demonstrators, “in particular against women”.
The European Council called on Iran to immediately stop the violent crackdowns against peaceful demonstrators and to release those detained, with full respect for their civil and political rights.
“Women are being killed by a moral police who tell women what is good for them. It is shameful”, said Luxembourg’s Prime Minister, Xavier Bettel, adding that one cannot turn a blind eye to what is happening in Iran.
The European Council also welcomed the restrictive measures adopted by the EU on 17 October against those responsible for the murder of Mahsa Amini and the crackdown on the protests (see EUROPE 13044/12).
The leaders also strongly condemned the Iranian authorities’ military support for Russia’s war of aggression, calling for its end and welcoming the sanctions adopted on 20 October (see EUROPE 13047/3).
