29/07/2022 (Agence Europe) – In a resolution adopted on Thursday 28 July, the United Nations General Assembly recognises the right to a healthy environment as a human right. This non-binding resolution underlines that climate change and environmental degradation are among the most pressing threats to the future of humanity and calls on States to intensify their efforts to ensure that their populations have access to a ‘clean, healthy and sustainable environment’. “This resolution sends a message that nobody can take nature, clean air and water, or a stable climate away from us”, said UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen. UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed “an important tool for accountability and climate justice”, adding that “the well-being of people around the world and the survival of future generations depends on the health of our planet”.
