The EU and the German G7 Presidency welcomed, in the evening of 28 July, the appointment of Oleksandr Klymenko as head of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office.
“Despite the ongoing Russian aggression, Ukraine goes on with reform efforts”, European External Action Service (EEAS) spokesperson Peter Stano said on Twitter, welcoming the appointment. “Independent and strong anti-corruption institutions are key for Ukraine fight against corruption and on EU path”, he said.
For its part, the German G7 Presidency said that the G7 ambassadors welcomed the appointment, saying that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had made possible this “long-awaited, positive” conclusion to the selection process. “This is a leap forward in making Ukraine’s anti-corruption architecture fit for purpose”, the Presidency explained, while warning that it was now necessary to ensure that the office had all the resources and institutional independence needed to tackle high-level corruption.
