Brussels, 14/07/2022 (Agence Europe) – One year to the day after more than 220 people died in floods in Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands, European Commission Executive Vice-President for the European Green Deal Frans Timmermans called for there to be a day of remembrance for the victims of extreme weather events caused by the climate crisis when he arrived at an informal meeting of environment ministers from European Union Member States on Thursday, 14 July. “It is clear these erratic weather patterns are a consequence of the climate crisis, and I think it’s time we paid a bit more attention to those victims”, the vice-president notably stated. Mr Timmermans thus intends to discuss this idea with his colleagues in the European Commission in order to submit a concrete proposal after the summer. This proposal will have to be approved by the Council of the EU and the European Parliament. (DG)
