Less POPs in waste, interinstitutional negotiations start on 11 May

09/05/2022 (Agence Europe)The European Parliament and the Council of the EU, assisted by the European Commission, will hold their first interinstitutional negotiation meeting (trilogue) on Wednesday 11 May on the proposed October 2021 regulation to tighten limit values for persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in waste (amendment of Annexes IV and V of the POPs Regulation (EU) 2019/102 transposing the Stockholm International Convention - see EUROPE 12822/10). By voting on 3 May on the basis of the report by Martin Hojsík (Renew Europe, Slovakia), the Parliament was much more ambitious than the European Commission in lowering the concentration values for these highly toxic substances within a tighter timeframe and adding substances to be eliminated (see EUROPE 12944/8). Negotiations with the EU Council, which adopted its position in March (see EUROPE 12909/14), will therefore be difficult. (AN)
