MEPs divided over whether food security should be taken into account in legislative proposals arising from European Green Deal

MEPs are divided over the extent to which the new food security imperatives will be accounted for in future legislative proposals arising from the European Green Deal.

The European Parliament is set to debate food security in the context of the war in Ukraine on Wednesday 23 March and to adopt a joint resolution (see EUROPE 12915/3).

The draft joint declaration of the EPP, S&D, Renew Europe and ECR groups could be modified through several amendments (https://aeur.eu/f/w4 ). It insists on the fact that the objectives of the European Green Dealmust not be compromised by immediate measures to increase resilience and strengthen self-sufficiency in terms of input”. However, it notes the need to take into account the consequences of the war in Ukraine on European and global food security.

An EPP group amendment calls for a “review” of the targets and timetable for specific initiatives under the European Green Deal to avoid “a loss of the productive potential of the EU’s agri-food sector”.

An amendment by the Greens/EFA group notes the need to consider food security in the medium and long term and cautions against measures that only serve to continue our current agricultural model, which has been scientifically proven to be “unsustainable” and characterised by “ overproduction in the livestock sector and the diversion of agricultural land towards the production of feedstock for biofuels”.
