Russian invasion of Ukraine / Migration

More than three million people have fled Ukraine, according to IOM

The number of refugees who have fled Ukraine has reached three million, according to the latest figures released on Tuesday 15 March by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), with Poland having already taken in more than one million refugees.

Invited to speak on the subject the same day by the CEPS (Center for European Policy Studies), the European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, once again welcomed the solidarity expressed in the countries bordering Ukraine and indicated that the solidarity platform set up by the Commission will continue to respond to the needs identified and to send aid on the spot, in particular via civil protection.

The Commissioner also wants the money made available to host countries to actually reach local organisations to meet the needs of hosting or providing access to school for children.

Most of the refugees who have arrived so far are women and children and “10% are men”, the Commissioner said. The tens of thousands of foreign students arriving from Ukraine are mainly from India, Nigeria or Azerbaijan, and mostly present in Romania and Moldova.

Ylva Johansson also said that all these third country nationals would be repatriated to their countries and that they are currently being well looked after. (Original version in French by Solenn Paulic)
