Christel Schaldemose expects EU Council to show ‘goodwill’ in interinstitutional discussions over DSA

MEP Christel Schaldemose (S&D, Denmark) briefed members of the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) on Monday 28 February on the state of play of the interinstitutional negotiations (‘trilogue’) on the Digital Services Act (DSA) (see EUROPE 12885/7).

Things are moving very slowly. We mainly spent our time in Strasbourg on 5 February trying to understand the positions of both sides on different issues, such as online sales”, said Ms Schaldemose, European Parliament rapporteur on the DSA.

No agreement or compromise has yet been reached over certain paragraphs of the text, notably the part on online sales.

There are still many discussions to be had on thorny issues”, the Danish MEP stressed. Among the sensitive issues, she explained, the European Parliament and the Council of the EU will have to agree on how to legislate on algorithms or targeted advertising.

I’m not worried yet, but I also think that the parties need to show goodwill to find compromises and move forward”, added Schaldemose.

We have again given a mandate at a technical level to find solutions for different issues and then to bring these issues back to the political level”, she told MEPs in the IMCO committee.

The next trilogue will take place on 15 March. “I am sure that in the next trilogue we will go into more detail”, she concluded. (Original version in French by Thomas Mangin)
