17/02/2022 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission opened a public consultation on Wednesday 16 February on the application of European production standards to imported products (see other news). The Commission is due to adopt a report in June, in line with the agreement on the reformed Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), which will assess “the rationale and legal feasibility of applying EU health and environmental standards to imported agricultural and agri-food products”. This will include, for example, animal welfare standards and processes and production methods. Among the measures it intends to evaluate, the Commission cites ambitious chapters on sustainability in EU trade agreements, enhanced cooperation with third countries, and the promotion of international standards in the relevant bodies. The consultation (https://aeur.eu/f/dx ) is open until 16 March. (LC)
