EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT PLENARY / Sudan

European Parliament condemns military coup and deadly violence against peaceful demonstrators

Alarmed by the deadly violence and violations of fundamental rights in Sudan, the European Parliament condemned the military coup of 25 October on Thursday 20 January and reiterated the urgent need for the military authorities to resume the path of dialogue and democratic transition in their country.

In an urgent resolution on the political situation in Sudan, adopted by 629 votes to 30 with 31 abstentions, Parliament deplores the killing of dozens of demonstrators and the many wounded at the hands of security services and other armed groups (see EUROPE 12871/14). It calls for independent investigations and for the perpetrators to be held accountable.

The resolution demands that the Sudanese military leadership set clear timelines and processes for a return to transition and for meeting the Sudanese people’s demands for freedom, peace and justice. It stresses the right of the Sudanese people to assemble and exercise their basic rights to have democracy restored and their basic needs met.

Parliament condemns all acts of violence against peaceful demonstrators, activists, journalists and all others peacefully exercising their right to freedom of expression, association or assembly. It calls for the immediate release of those currently detained without charge or trial and the immediate lifting of the state of emergency.

MEPs are also calling for “an active discussion of the situation in Sudan” at the meeting of EU Foreign Ministers on Monday 24 January.
