13/01/2022 (Agence Europe) – To limit global warming to 1.5°C by 2100, the rate of CO2 added to the atmosphere must slow by about 20% over the next five years, the UK’s Met Office said in a forecast published on 11 January. These forecasts indicate that the increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration in 2022 will be 2.14 ± 0.52 ppm compared to 2021 (a lower increase than in recent years due to the favourable La Niña climate phenomenon). However, under the 1.5°C long-term warming scenario used by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the increase in the addition of CO2 to the atmosphere will slow to an average of 2 ppm per year over the next five years, the Met Office notes, almost 20% less than the recent average annual increase.
