The European Commission said on Monday 18 October in a progress report on the EU’s Covid-19 digital certificate that 591 million certificates have been issued since the Regulation came into force in June, including 437 million vaccination certificates, 144 million Covid-19 test certificates and 10 million certificates of recovery from Covid-19.
A total of 43 countries are connected to the system, which recognises certificates from other third countries as equivalent so that their nationals can travel to the EU and vice versa.
The system is still being improved, the Commission writes in its report, particularly within the framework of the eHealth Network. It is now possible for Member States to exchange their national rules on the acceptance of certificates through the EU gateway. This allows, for example, a faster and more reliable check of certificates against national rules.
The report also provides an update on Covid-19 recovery certificates, based on rapid tests, which are not yet covered by the Regulation.
