02/09/2021 (Agence Europe) – World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala expressed scepticism about the EU’s proposed border Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM; see EUROPE 12762/5) in a Bruegel Institute webinar on Thursday 2 September. “I would like to see a global carbon price, but we are not there yet. [...] The best approach would be for us to all get together and have groups of countries agree on a common approach to carbon pricing”, she explained. On the EU proposal, the Director General is waiting to see the final contours, and “the devil is in the details”, she said. She recalled that developing countries were not comfortable with the idea of a CBAM, and that this should be taken into account. However, she welcomed the fact that the proposed instrument applies only to certain sectors of activity. (LM)
