19/07/2021 (Agence Europe) – Will we see the European flag at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympic Games on Friday 23 July? This is what the Commissioner for Promoting the European Way of Life, Margarítis Schinás, and the Slovenian Prime Minister, Janez Janša - whose country currently holds the rotating Presidency of the EU Council - are both calling for. Both wrote to the President of the International Olympic Committee on Sunday 18 July asking for permission to display the EU colours during the presentation of the national teams. They are suggesting that the Slovenian Olympic team should enter the stadium carrying both their national and EU flags. According to Schinás and Janša, “this will render Slovenian athletes ambassadors for European unity and the values underpinning our Union which match those of the Olympic movement”. (AC)
