On Thursday 8 July, the European Commission announced the launch of an expert group on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and data in the education and training sector.
The main task of the 25 experts, selected by the Commission through a call for applications, will be developing guidelines on the subject for teachers and trainers.
The group will focus in particular on the risks associated with AI technologies and data mining: “challenges related to non-discrimination, ethical, security and privacy concerns”, explains the Commission.
Furthermore, it notes a “pressing need” for professors and students to have a basic understanding of AI and the use of data. It expects the 25 experts to contribute to the promotion and exchange of knowledge, experience and good practice in this field.
The group, co-led by the Commission’s Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology, held its first meeting on Thursday. It will hold three more meetings between now and April.
The guidelines will be presented in September 2022 and will be accompanied by a “training programme for researchers and students on the ethical aspects of AI”, the Commission says.
