24/06/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday, 24 June, the European Parliament approved the text of an agreement with the EU Council on conservation and enforcement measures applicable in the Regulatory Area of the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO). The report by Isabel Carvalhais (S&D, Portugal) was adopted with 674 votes in favour, 2 against, and 17 abstentions. New NAFO conservation and enforcement measures—which are binding on all NAFO contracting parties—have come into force. They are to be incorporated into EU law insofar as they are not already covered by EU law. This text adapts Regulation 2019/833 so as to, in particular, apply NAFO mesh measurement norms, introduce the definition of ‘fishing vessel’ used by NAFO, and take into account the mission of the European Fisheries Control Agency.
