European Commission wants to see Schengen internal border controls become a real measure of last resort

On Wednesday 2 June, the European Commission proposed to the Member States a two-stage strategy to strengthen the Schengen area of free movement, which has been in difficulty since 2015 due to a succession of crises (see EUROPE B12731A1).
