European Commission opens consultation for second time on future EU strategy for sustainable textiles

A second public consultation, launched on 12 May by the European Commission, is open until 4 August on the future EU strategy for sustainable textiles which will aim to strengthen industrial competitiveness and innovation, promote the European market for sustainable and recycled textiles and foster new business models (see EUROPE 12630/15, 12485/9).

This initiative is expected in the third quarter of 2021. According to the Commission, it aims to ensure that the textile industry recovers from the Covid-19 crisis in a sustainable and competitive way by applying circular economy principles to production, products, consumption, waste management and secondary raw materials.

The institution is looking for feedback from all stakeholders, within and outside the EU, to finalise its initiative.

Contributions will be welcomed from actors in the textile value chain (manufacturers of fibres, yarns, fabrics or clothing/textiles, retailers, collectors, sorters and recyclers of post-consumer textiles, including SMEs) as well as from public authorities, citizens, consumers and social partners, investors and research, innovation and training centres.
