EU gas supply sourcing costs fell in 2020, says ACER

Between 2019 and 2020, average gas supply sourcing costs have decreased by more than €4 per MWh in most EU Member States, thereby reaching a historically low level, said a preliminary assessment published on Monday 26 April by the EU Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER) and the Energy Community.

According to the paper, the reason for the drop is mainly due to a reduced demand for gas caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the highest-ever liquefied natural gas (LNG) deliveries in the first half of 2020.

Lower prices for other energy commodities and above-average underground storage stocks at the beginning of the injection season were other contributing factors.

If gas sourcing costs in 2020 are compared to their average between 2012 and 2019, prices have declined by €8/MWh, state the analysis.
