Mr Borrell welcomes ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus to end crisis

The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, on Saturday 24 April welcomed the ‘Five-Point Consensus’ on Myanmar reached at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit on the same day.

He said this was an “encouraging step forward” in the organisation’s efforts to resolve the crisis in the country since the 1 February coup.

The EU joins ASEAN in calling for an immediate cessation of violence and supports the commitments made at the ASEAN Summit to start a constructive dialogue involving all parties (including the CRPH/NUG) to seek a peaceful solution”, he added in his statement.

Furthermore, Mr Borrell said that the appointment of an ASEAN envoy to facilitate mediation between the parties is an “important commitment” which assumes that he will be able to effectively engage all parties.

We stand ready to support the dialogue with all key stakeholders who wish to resolve the situation in good faith, with a view to facilitating a swift reinstatement of power to the legitimate democratic institutions”, the High Representative stressed, recalling the EU’s demand for the immediate release of all political prisoners.

ASEAN has also pledged to provide much-needed additional humanitarian assistance.
