European Union Member States, on Wednesday 14 April, gave the green light by a large majority to the European Commission’s proposal to re-authorise the use of non-ruminant proteins and processed animal protein from insects in poultry and pig feed (see EUROPE 12682/9).
Only two countries, France and Ireland, abstained from the vote, which was held under a written procedure.
The European Commission has assured that all guarantees are in place to avoid any risk of cross-contamination with prohibited ruminant proteins. The delegated regulation will now undergo a three-month review period by the European Parliament and the Council of the EU. The aim is to adopt this text by autumn.
The re-authorisation of these processed animal proteins from non-ruminants would reduce the EU’s dependence on proteins from non-Member States, the Commission also argues.
Meat and bone meal has already been authorised since 2013 in aquaculture (2017 for those derived from insects). (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
