European Parliament calls for measures to limit marine litter

25/03/2021 (Agence Europe)On Thursday 25 March, the European Parliament recommended measures to limit marine litter by adopting (without amendments) the report by Catherine Chabaud (Renew Europe, France) on this subject (see EUROPE 12664/12). “The stakes are high”, she reminded the plenary on Wednesday 24 March: Eight million tonnes of plastic end up in the ocean every year and 5 trillion plastic particles are dispersed in the sea. She emphasised: - measures to combat the impact of nanoplastics and microplastics on both fisheries resources and human health; - the link between land and sea in European policies (waste and water management); - strengthening the circular economy in fisheries; - marking of fishing gear.
