Brussels, 02/03/2021 (Agence Europe) – The European Parliament’s Committee on Legal Affairs decided on Monday 1 March to take the European Commission to the Court of Justice of the European Union for failing to achieve genuine visa reciprocity between the EU and the United States. Washington still requires visas for four Member States (Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria and Cyprus). The Commission took note of this vote and highlighted, on Tuesday 2 March, that the consequences of this suspension of the visa-free regime for US citizens would have serious consequences for all relations between the two partners. It also noted that the Visa Regulation allows it to take this aspect into account when deciding not to impose this kind of retaliatory measure on the United States. This approach would, in its opinion, be “counterproductive”. (SP)
