EU RESPONSE TO COVID-19 / Health

Covid-19, Nigeria, Angola and Cambodia received AstraZeneca vaccines through Covax

Nigeria, Angola and Cambodia received Covid-19 vaccines on Tuesday 2 March, delivered by the Covax initiative led by the WHO, GAVI (the Vaccine Alliance) and CEPI (Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations) and financially supported by the EU, its Member States, the EIB and the EBRD to the tune of €1 billion.

3.92 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine to vaccinate health workers have arrived in Abuja, the capital of Africa’s most populous country, GAVI was pleased to say.

Vaccination campaigns have already started in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, which received previous deliveries (see EUROPE 12668/4).

Covax aims to ensure fair and equitable access to coronavirus vaccines for 92 low- and middle-income countries.

The first round of allocations by the end of May is expected to deliver 237 million doses of the vaccine manufactured by AstraZeneca and in India (by the Serum Institute India, under licence), to 142 countries.

It currently covers 23 countries, including Benin, Botswana, Cape Verde, Afghanistan, Argentina and Bahrain, and will be regularly updated.
