EU calls for WTO arbitration procedure to be opened regarding Indonesia’s export restrictions

14/01/2021 (Agence Europe) – In January 2020, Indonesia imposed an export ban on nickel to encourage its domestic production of stainless steel. However, these measures contradict the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) of the World Trade Organization (WTO). “After several attempts to resolve the problem directly with Indonesia, the EU is obliged to take action and refer the matter to the WTO”, said EU Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis.
