On Wednesday 13 January, the ambassadors of the EU Member States (Coreper) validated the political agreement reached on 17 December 2020 between the European Parliament and the Council of the EU on the post-2020 LIFE programme, which will cover the period 2021-2027.
Already briefly informed of the content of this agreement the day after it was reached (see EUROPE 12626/9), this time they were able to give the go-ahead to approve the regulation, after analysing the final compromise text on this financial instrument - the only one specifically dedicated to the environment and climate in the EU’s 2021-2027 budget.
The €5.432 billion LIFE programme will fund projects in four areas: nature, biodiversity, climate action and clean energy.
The text must be submitted for validation to the members of the European Parliament’s Environment Committee on Friday 15 January.
For the regulation to be adopted, the European Parliament and the EU Council will also have to endorse the text of the agreement at first reading.
