13/01/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 12 January, the European Commission launched a new call for applications to select energy infrastructure projects to be included in the European Union’s fifth list of ‘Projects of Common Interest’ (PCIs). While the previous call for applications concerned projects in the field of electricity and gas (see EUROPE 12610/31), this one is for projects in the field of smart grids and carbon dioxide (CO2) transport. Scheduled for the end of 2021, the fifth list of PCIs will be based on the current regulation (347/2013) on trans-European energy networks (TEN-E), although the Commission has recently presented a proposal to revise the text (see EUROPE 12623/3). As the proposal is still only at the beginning of the legislative process, the revised rules will not be in force in time to govern the formation of the fifth list. The call for applications is open until 8 March. (DG)
