06/01/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 6 January, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, welcomed the “solidarity and stability” agreement signed the previous day between the members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) (Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates and Qatar) on the full normalisation of their relations. On 4 January, Saudi Arabia decided to reopen its borders with Qatar (see EUROPE 12629/19). “The EU welcomes these significant developments as they will considerably strengthen regional stability and restore GCC unity and cooperation in full”, Mr Borrell highlighted in a statement. He praised the mediation role of Kuwait and the United States. According to Borrell, the EU is ready to support further regional integration within the GCC and to strengthen its partnership with the latter. (CG)
