18/12/2020 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 17 December, MEPs backed the EU’s new Internal Security Strategy (see EUROPE 12535/1). By 543 votes to 64 (with 82 abstentions), they adopted the non-legislative resolution tabled by Spain’s Juan Fernando López Aguilar (S&D) supporting action against terrorism and organised crime, child abuse, disinformation and hybrid threats, the smuggling of migrants, illegal drugs, and firearms trafficking. The resolution calls for all new legislative proposals to be accompanied by a full impact assessment, focusing in particular on fundamental rights. On data encryption, the text also asks the Commission to assess whether a regulatory solution could be found to allow law enforcement authorities lawful and targeted access to encrypted data while respecting fundamental rights.
