09/10/2020 (Agence Europe) – On 5 October, the European Commission approved the registration of the Italian olive oil ‘Olio lucano’ in the register of protected geographical indications (PGI), and on 6 October, the Spanish ‘Pimentón de Mallorca’ in the register of protected designations of origin (PDO) and the Croatian ‘Varaždinski klipic’ (PGI). ‘Olio lucano’ is an extra virgin olive oil produced in Basilicata, southern Italy. The ‘Pimentón de Mallorca’, produced on the island of Mallorca, is obtained by grinding dried chillies. The ‘Varaždinski klipic’ is a dark yellow or golden baguette-shaped bun sprinkled with cumin seeds. These new PGIs will join more than 1,490 food products already protected at EU level. (LC)
