24/09/2020 (Agence Europe) – The French Section of the European Association of Journalists (AEJ) has criticised the excessive dominance of English in documents published by the European Commission in a letter sent on Wednesday 23 September to the Commission’s president, Ursula von der Leyen. They used the example of the documents supporting the ‘Asylum and Migration Pact', which was presented on the same day, and they are of the opinion that this is not an isolated case, but “a repeated practice that is now almost systematic, especially since (her) arrival at the head of the European Commission”. AEJ France notes that “the use of several languages is not only a legal obligation of the Treaties, but also has both a valuable political and practical impact”. They believe that “the European institutions cannot validly continue to fight against disinformation if they persist (...) in communicating in just one language”.
