17/09/2020 (Agence Europe) – The political groups in the European Parliament have been announcing their candidates for the 2020 Sakharov Prize for several days. The EPP, S&D and Renew Europe groups propose to honour the Belarusian democratic opposition, represented by the Coordination Council and figures from civil and political society (see other news). The ECR Group has also nominated the democratic opposition in Belarus, represented by Svetlana Tikhanovskaya. For their part, the Greens/EFA and GUE/NGL groups have, as candidates, the activists Guapinol and Berta Cáceres, in Honduras, while the choice of Identity and Democracy went to Monsignor Najeeb Moussa Michaeel, Archbishop of Mosul, in Iraq. Finally, four LGBTI rights activists are nominated in Poland: Jakub Gawron, Paulina Pająk, Paweł Preneta and Kamil Maczuga. (CG)
