On Monday 7 September, members of the European Parliament's Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) voted in favour of a reduction of at least 55% in the European Union’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (compared to 1990 emission levels) as a new European climate target for 2030.

The vote was extremely close, with the compromise amendment in question – supported by the S&D, Renew Europe, GUE/NGL and Greens/EFA groups – being adopted by the smallest possible margin (37 votes...
