As the 77th edition of the Venice Mostra opens, the European Commission published, on Wednesday 2 September, a monitoring report on the Creative Europe programme, whose MEDIA component helps to support film production.
According to this 2019 analysis, “the Creative Europe programme continues to provide essential support for European audiovisual content and enhances musical diversity, artist mobility and gender equality, while at the same time contributing to making the sector greener and more sustainable”.
As far as the beneficiaries are concerned, it shows that the MEDIA sub-programme supported 25% of all film productions in the EU, as in the previous year. Thanks to the programme, more than 2,200 professionals received training, more than 430 film scripts were developed, 44 television series were produced, 290 films were distributed and 75 festivals and dozens of companies experimenting with online distribution models were supported. While 4 MEDIA-supported films are competing in this year’s Golden Lion at the Mostra, the Commission points out that in 2019, 21 films financed by MEDIA have received 40 awards in 7 of the world’s most prestigious film festivals.
The report also indicates that the other components of the program have also brought many benefits and that the guarantee mechanism has improved access to financing. (Original version in French by Sophie Petitjean)
