Pending the EU’s revised draft budget plan 2021-2027, which is crucial for tackling the climate and economic crisis, the NGO CAN Europe (Climate Action Network) stresses the importance of aligning the long-term climate strategies of the EU and its Member States with the financial stimulus measures.
On 13 May, the NGO published its recommendations to broaden the draft strategy for climate neutrality by 2050, notified by the EU to the UN (see EUROPE 12440/2).
“The Covid-19 crisis was a clear wake up call for humanity to make our societies and the economy more resilient in the longer term. Only with an ambitious climate target and a strong financial framework, we can avoid worsening the climate crisis”, comments NGO Director Wendel Trio. According to him, the EU must urgently increase its 2030 target to a reduction of at least 65% of its emissions and achieve climate neutrality by 2040.
The NGO advocates: - to add to the strategy all forthcoming legislative proposals and sectoral policies in key sectors (transport, buildings, agriculture, energy and waste) and a monitoring mechanism that will allow the EU to follow the progress of Member States; - to address the land use and forestry sector, which can substantially increase CO2 removals; - to add the Just Transition Mechanism and other social measures being developed as part of the European Green Deal.
