11/05/2020 (Agence Europe) – Iceland's Rósa Björk Brynjólfsdóttir (GUE), rapporteur of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe on violence and exploitation of migrant children, called on European countries on Monday 11 May to take urgent action to help nationally displaced children, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. This was based on UNICEF's ‘Lost at home’ report, which indicates that 19 million children will be forcibly displaced in 2019 due to conflict and violence. This is the highest number ever recorded, noted Ms Björk Brynjólfsdóttir, noting also that Turkey and Ukraine were the most impacted countries in Europe. Sometimes detained, these children are particularly vulnerable to the spread of the Covid-19 virus, and “should be given urgent access to proper healthcare and protection”, she said.
