Following Belgium and Austria, Sweden is also withdrawing from coal

21/04/2020 (Agence Europe)With the closure of the Värtaverket (Stockholm) power station, Sweden has become the third European country, alongside Belgium and Austria (see EUROPE 12470/26), to completely phase out coal from its electricity production. This decision was welcomed on Tuesday 21 April by Europe Beyond Coal, a campaign that includes various organisations that are calling for coal to be phased out across Europe by 2030. According to Europe Beyond Coal, six other European countries are expected to join Belgium, Austria and Sweden by 2025: France (2022), Slovakia (2023), Portugal (2023), the United Kingdom (2024), Ireland (2025) and Italy (2025), and five others by 2030: Greece (2028), the Netherlands (2029), Finland (2029), Hungary (2030) and Denmark (2030). Discussions on the withdrawal from coal are also under way in the Czech Republic, Spain and North Macedonia. Germany still needs to adopt its coal exit legislation to confirm that it intends to phase out coal by 2038. (DG)
