21/04/2020 (Agence Europe) – The European Parliament’s Committee on Culture and Education calls to not abandon the cultural and creative sectors during the COVID-19 pandemic. In a letter sent on Monday 20 April to Commissioners Thierry Breton (Internal Market) and Mariya Gabriel (Culture), the Committee raised the idea of an emergency fund to support the media and press sector, which has seen its advertising revenue fall by up to 80% in some Member States. This instrument, say MEPs, could be replenished with funds that cannot be spent on other programmes because of the pandemic. They also call for measures to support the cultural and creative sectors: they want to increase the guarantee mechanism of Creative Europe by supplementing it from the 2021 budget or by transferring an envelope from the European Fund for Strategic Investments.
