01/04/2020 (Agence Europe) – The European Union promises to “study very carefully” recent US proposals for a way out of the political crisis in Venezuela, said the spokesman for the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell. The day before, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had proposed that President Nicolás Maduro—whose second election is not recognised by the international community—and his opponent Juan Guaidó, who proclaimed himself the interim president, should take a step aside to facilitate the formation of an interim government composed of members of both camps who will be responsible for organising elections in the coming months. “The European Union will support all steps leading to a genuine political process towards a peaceful and democratic resolution of the crisis, based on credible and transparent elections”, the spokesperson added. They also wanted to urge all actors to minimise the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in Venezuela. (MB)
